Our weird item this week is actually a practical one, especially if people purloin your lunch on a regular bases. Put your sandwich/ food du jour into one of the pre-bugged lunchbags and scare the thieves away for sure. Note: these are not actual bugs, as that would be beyond gross, unless you are Andrew Zimmern and enjoy eating gross things such as cockroaches and flies for fun. Or if you are part frog. Ribbit.

Sidenote: These beauties are only $7.66 a box (click link or image to buy) and are well worth it if you’ve ever had to buy a lunch after your homemade lunch went missing.

The snow season this year has been a whopper, to say the least. Especially on the East coast. Many cities have run through their budget for snow removal already, and winter is far from over. What’s a city to do? Bergen County, NJ decided to use pickle juice. It costs about 1/4th of what rock salt costs. Many other cities are already using a brine solution, which is basically the same thing without involvement of pickles.
No word on whether the smell has increased business to local delis (subliminal advertising, perhaps?), or where they can find so much juice.
I’ll bet deli owners will start putting their pickle juice out on the sidewalks after hearing about this.
10 points for creative thinking, Bergen County!

A Masachussetts man rushed to the hospital for a collapsed lung received an unusual diagnosis – a pea plant growing inside the lung. Ron Sveden, who was already battling emphysema, feared he had cancer and was a bit relieved that his x-rays showed something rather unusual instead – a pea plant!

Doctors believe he probably ate a pea that “went down the wrong way” at some point, and it later sprouted.

Looks like those stories we used to believe as kids about swallowing seeds which would later grow might not be too far off. Uh oh! ;)

White Castle restaurants in major metropolitan areas are catering to the Valentine’s date-night crowd by offering candle light dinners. They’re even taking reservations.

Talk about the ultimate cheapskate cheap date! I can imagine the conversation now:

“Hi honey, I’ve made us reservations at a special place for a candle light dinner”

Woman: “Ooh, I can hardly wait….”

Then the big day comes, they pull up into the parking lot…

The man (or whomever made the date) is going to get one of two things: a big laugh or a big kick in the White Castle!

Courts in the Netherlands ruled in favor of a McDonald’s employee who was fired for giving a coworker a free slice of cheese on a hamburger. According to the story, a coworker had ordered a hamburger, which the employee in question rung up as a hamburger. then the coworker asked for it to be a cheeseburger, so the employee gave her a cheeseburger.

McDonald’s fired said employee for “giving gifts to family and friends.”

Wow, what a wonderful gift — a slice of cheese!!!

The court said, “it’s just a piece of cheese.”

And so now that inexpensive piece of cheese, and the dispute that ensued, is costing McDonald’s $5,900 it was ordered to pay to the let-go employee.

Mayor McCheese, justice is served!

A retired man in Somerset in the UK brought home a bunch of bananas from his local supermarket as he often did. But when Mr. Cedric Cooper opened this extra-wide banana, he was in for a surprise. Twin bananas in one skin!

So what does one call these: siamese bananas? a banananana? Whatever the name, it’s still double the fun.

Burger King is opening a restaurant in Miami Beach that will serve beer along with burgers and fries, as the chain’s first U.S. location with alcohol. The Whopper Bar South Beach will serve Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors brews. In other words – cheap food, cheap beers.

The restaurant will offer outdoor dining, a walk-up window and delivery service and is scheduled to open in mid-February.

If it’s successful, other BKs around the world may soon serve beer.

beer king?

The decision to serve beer was to give the restaurants more of a “sit-down feel,” according to restaurant execs. Frankly, having food that takes 30 seconds to cook and furniture that looks like it belongs in a fast-food chain does not a sit-down restaurant make.

And beer, really? Whomever thought up most of the commercials with the Burger-King-masked man must’ve have been drinking far too much of it. Is it just us, or is that one of the scariest commercial series ever?
